Understanding the Impact of PTSD

Understanding the Impact of PTSD on Families and the Role of Veteran Service Organizations

In recognition of National PTSD Awareness Month in June, and National PTSD Awareness Day on June 27th, it’s crucial to acknowledge the profound impact PTSD can have not only on veterans but also on their families. PTSD, or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. For many veterans, the battle doesn’t end when they return home; they continue to face the invisible wounds of war.

The Effects of PTSD on Families

PTSD can deeply affect family dynamics. Veterans may experience flashbacks, anxiety, and emotional numbness, which can lead to difficulties in communication and emotional connection with loved ones. Families often bear the brunt of these challenges, feeling the strain of supporting their loved one while managing their own emotional responses. Children may struggle to understand the changes in their parent, and spouses might feel isolated or overwhelmed.

Support from the Veteran Service Office

Organizations like the Huron County Veteran Service Office (HCVSO) play a critical role in offering support and resources to veterans and their families. We understand the daily battles faced by our veteran community and are committed to providing assistance, whether it’s through counseling, connecting families with support groups, or offering guidance on available benefits and services.

Join Us for the HCVSO Monthly Coffee Club

In our ongoing effort to support veterans and their families, we invite you to join us at our next Coffee Club event on Saturday, July 13, from 9-11 am at the Veterans Pavilion at the Huron County Fairgrounds. We are excited to welcome Heather, owner and practitioner of Serene Intentions, who will share information and resources on EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), also known as "tapping."

EFT is an easy-to-learn technique that can help transform how we respond to uncomfortable thoughts, feelings, and memories. This method is especially beneficial for managing PTSD symptoms, helping individuals reduce pain, tension, and stress.
